The number of Haitians in the Dominican Republic has climbed to at least a million after last January's earthquake that destroyed most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and killed 300,000 people, injuring at least that many more and leaving 1.2 million people homeless, according to "official figures from the Haitian government". The population figures for Haitian immigrants represent a 15% increase, according to a report in El Nuevo Diario. Migration Department chief Sigfrido Pared Perez said that "to say that the Haitian presence in the Dominican Republic has not increased since the earthquake is to try and deny reality". Quoted in El Caribe, the Migration director said that his department and the Dominican army have been able to prevent an even greater flow of migrants into Dominican territory.
