A Nativa gas station on Carretera Mella in Santo Domingo province is piloting a self-service program. This is a first for the DR where all gas stations are full service. The station is selling petrol for RD$2 less. Customers have to enter the store and pay for the gasoline and then use one of the three self-service pumps.
Gas station manager Jangle Vasquez says the RD$2 discount is to encourage customers to start using the service. He said that the self-service facility requires fewer employees and they are passing these savings on to customers, as reported in Hoy.
He said that the rising crime rate in the area is behind the decision to move to self-service. He said it was a way to get around the thefts by attendants themselves as well as by motorcycle drivers.
He said this also is a way to prevent credit card cloning and staff pumping less gas than was paid for. He said he has plans to roll out the model to all his other gas stations, close to 20 in total.
