View Full Version : Fernandez to meet Wulff, Merkel & Obama

President Leonel Fernandez will leave on Saturday, 3 July at 3:25pm on Iberia Airlines flight 6502 from Las Americas International Airport for on an official trip that takes him to meet with the government leadership of Germany and the United States. He will spend his first day in Madrid, but continues on Sunday to Germany. He is scheduled to return Wednesday, 14 July.
On his agenda are meetings with US President Barack Obama, and Germany's President Christian Wulff, as well as with the Prime Minister of Germany Angela Merkel.
Fernandez has a meeting with Prime Minister Angela Merkel scheduled for Monday, 5 July. On that same day he will meet with the German President. He is scheduled to receive military honors in accordance with his rank.
On Saturday, 10 July he will fly to New York for holding private meetings. On Sunday, 11 July he will fly to Washington from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.
On Monday 12 July, he will be received in Washington DC at the White House by President Barack Obama. On Tuesday, he will visit George Washington University.
President Fernandez will be one of the first foreign statesmen to meet with Wulff. A lawyer and politician of the conservative Christian Democratic Union, Wulff was elected President of Germany on 30 June 2010. His predecessor Horst Koehler unexpectedly had resigned on 31 May 2010 after German politicians criticized his comments in regards to overseas military deployments.
In his inaugural address, Wulff stressed the need to build bridges between different parts of society and better integrate foreigners living in Germany. Wulff told the German parliament on day 1: "Our diversity is sometimes strenuous, but it is ultimately a source of strength and ideas and a possibility to see the world through different eyes and perspectives".
