Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou said lFriday, 2 July in Taipei that Taiwan will further enhance ties with its diplomatic allies as it improves relations with China. During a meeting with officials from the Dominican Republic at the Presidential Office, Ma said he hoped that joint projects in agriculture, education, national defense and economy would continue. "As we improve our relations with China, we will further strengthen our cooperation with our allies," Ma said.
The delegation from the DR was headed by Armed Forces Minister, Major General Pedro Rafael Pena Antonio.
Ma highlighted he has visited the DR, a Caribbean ally, twice since his inauguration in May 2008 and that Dominican President Leonel Fernandez is a visionary and competent leader who is willing to help others.
The Dominican Republic impressed the world by playing an important role in aiding earthquake-ravaged Haiti, Ma said.
