On his first day in Germany, President Leonel Fernandez met with German President Christian Wulff at the Schloss Bellevue Palace in Berlin. He was welcomed with military honors. On his agenda was a working lunch hosted by Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, followed by a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel. Fernandez then hosted a press conference at the Ministry.
Fernandez is traveling with Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, Hacienda Minister Vicente Bengoa, press secretary Rafael Nunez, chief of military corps General Hector Belisario Medina Medina and deputy director of the National Investigations Department Victor Crispin. Also traveling on this trip are invited journalists Adriano Miguel Tejada of Diario Libre and Oscar Medina.
His agenda also included a visit to the Hasso Plattner Institute, a meeting with Fritjof Von Nordenskjold, executive vice president of the German Council on Foreign Relations Boards, where President Fernandez is booked for a conference.
His Tuesday agenda includes a meeting at the Deutsche Bank, the German commercial bank that has been a leading financier of public works in the DR.
He also will attend a luncheon at the German government cooperation bank. He is also due to visit the Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit, and to give a talk at the Ibero-American Institute on "The Dominican Republic: Political, Social, and Economic Situation at Present and Prospects for the future."
On Wednesday, 7 July, Fernandez will visit Hamburg for meetings with business leaders at the Latin American Business Association at the headquarters of the Confederation of German Chambers of Commerce.
He is also scheduled for a meeting with the Mayor of Hamburg, Ole von Beust, and a lunch at the Hamburg Senate. From there he is scheduled to fly to Paris. He returns to Santo Domingo on 14 July.
