The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has announced that parents can now apply for birth certificates for public schoolchildren online. Judge Roberto Rosario said that these may soon be paid by credit card and the birth certificates will be home delivered. He said that since the start, 3,306 birth certificates have been delivered, and 82,002 have been requested.
He said that June, July and August are the peak months for requesting birth certificates, as children enroll in schools. The online facility is expected to reduce the long queues involved in requesting the mandatory school document.
The facility is available to anyone who has been issued their School ID, which he says enables them to transfer to any school in the system without having to request a physical birth certificate.
Rosario said that 451,356 children have been awarded their school ID at birth in public hospitals. Another 700,000 are in the system that would bring the database for public school students to 1.1 million.
Private schools can also apply to be part of the system.
