Several weeks of rains are behind the increase in the number of dengue-related deaths and dengue cases this year. El Dia reports that three times the number of cases has been registered compared to 2009, a year with few rainy days. The newspaper says that 1,291 cases were recorded for the first half of 2009, of which 70 were of the serious hemorrhagic dengue fever. This year there have been 4,098 cases, 600 of which were hemorrhagic.
El Dia reports that the Ministry of Public Health has intensified its prevention campaigns for this year.
Worldwide, more than 50 million cases of dengue fever occur every year. Dengue is transmitted to humans by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which feeds exclusively during daylight hours. At present, the only method of controlling or preventing dengue virus transmission is to combat the vector mosquitoes. It is important to discard items that can collect rain or stagnant water.
