Around 70% of residents in the cities of Santo Domingo and Santiago use public transport. Technical Transport Office (OTTT) director Angel Segura says that there is an urgent need to improve public transport. He said that the disproportionate increase in the number of private cars would lead the cities to collapse under the burden of traffic jams. He said that there is a need to organize public transport and make it more efficient so that people do not feel the need to purchase a vehicle.
According to the DGII, there were 2,570,220 vehicles in 2009, up 51% with 125,653 new units in 2009. The number of new vehicles on average has increased 10.13% from 2005 to 2008. In 2009, there were 1,252,713 motorcycles and 645,258 vehicles.
