An 81-year old man, Elio Reyes Severino has been shot dead by a policeman, reportedly because he did not heed a call by the agent to stop in an unlit area near Samana. The victim's son was driving the vehicle and it is reported that the pursuit went on for 7.5kms. Hoy reports this is the second such case in two weeks, reflecting the incompetence of police agents. Earlier last week, university student Abraham Ramos was shot dead by a policeman who had also ordered him to stop in a dark area. Ramos had signaled he would stop further on in a well-lit area.
The Police suspended and sent to justice Major Jose Estrella, second lieutenant Alberto Peguero and sergeants Richard Urbaez and Miguel Frias as responsible for the death of the 81-year old man.
Police spokesman Nelson Rosario called on the public to heed police orders to stop to prevent "some needless inconveniences," as reported. Aside from Reyes's death, the other recent "inconvenience" was the killing of university student Abraham Ramos shot in the back of the head when he refused to stop in a dark area where the Police had been hiding.
