A suspected contract killer was on the list that Ivanovich Smester Ginebra had made for payments by fugitive Puerto Rican drug baron Jose David Figueroa Agosto, as reported in El Dia. Gian (Rojas Matos) is listed with US$5,000 and a gift of US$300. The money was delivered after Figueroa was able to elude persecution on 3 September 2009.
El Dia reports that Figueroa Agosto had used Smester's services to make payments to the person that the authorities now say was who recruited the group of contract killers that the authorities now say are responsible for the murder of at least four people - former Police colonel Jose Amado Gonzalez, Omar Antigua Polanco, Ruben Soto Hayet and Jose Gabriel Arias Castillo.
Reportedly, when Smester Ginebra was arrested on 6 January 20, his car contained a list in which a person identified as Gian appears with the US$5,000 and US$300 allotments. Preliminary investigations say this is Gian Enrique Rojas Matos, known as "el boricua" for having lived in Puerto Rico where he spent time in jail where he is supposed to have met Figueroa Agosto.
On the list are payments made for US$874,000. The newspaper says that another US$226,000 is missing, so the total would have been for US$1 million.
Investigators believe Rojas Matos helped Figueroa Agosto escape when he abandoned the vehicle near a workshop that belonged to Rojas and disappeared.
