The 2010 Centrobasket Championship begins today at the Palacio de los Deportes Virgilio Travieso Soto in Santo Domingo. The leading regional basketball competition will be held through 11 July. The Dominican team is coached by Eric Musselman from the USA. The first three qualify for the 2011 FIBA-Americas Championship (Mexico) that in turn is a qualifier for the 2012 Olympic Games (London). The first six qualify for the basketball championship that is part of the Central American and Caribbean Games later this year in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
On the Dominican roster are Charlie Villanueva (Detroit Pistons), Jack Michael Martinez, Kelvin Pena, Amaury Filion, Ronald Ramon, Franklin Western, Carlos Morban, Manuel Fortuna, Carlos Paniagua, Joel Ramirez, Juan Pablo Montas and Manuel Guzman.
The DR plays in Group A competing against the British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Panama and the US Virgin Islands. Competing in Group B are Belize, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Trinidad & Tobago.
In the preliminary round each team plays against the other four in their group (July 5-9). The top two teams per group continue their participation and the other six teams go home. The four teams still alive will play in the semifinal (1A vs. 2B, 1B vs. 2A) on July 10 and the finals will be played the next day.
The 2010 Centrobasket Championship qualifies the top four teams for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship (Pre-Olympic), the top eight for the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and the top three for the 2011 Pan-American Games scheduled for Guadalajara, Mexico.
The DR plays today against Panama at 8:30pm, and tomorrow against Jamaica at 8:30pm.
