The third tropical storm of this season, Chris, formed on Tuesday morning east of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Storm warnings have been issued for Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Maarten and other small islands. Chris has maximum winds of 65kph and is expected to pass north of the Dominican Republic some time after Thursday. The 2006 hurricane season began on 1 June and will end on 30 November. Experts have forecast an active season this year, but not as active as last year's, when 28 storms formed, 15 of which became hurricanes.
