Congress will have to approve another loan for the completion of the Santo Domingo metro system, according to Office for the Reorganization of Transport (OPRET) Director Diandino Pena, who disclosed this information when he received the proposals for the electromechanical phase of the project. Diario Libre reports that this phase includes 10 sub-stations among which is the installation of an electrical sub-station, mechanical escalators and elevators. Last week, the Senate ratified a EUR106.7 million loan for the purchase of train wagons. The amount of the new loan was not disclosed. Pena said that it would be announced after the proposals that were delivered yesterday are opened. Currently, the total cost of the work is unknown but Pena informed that they are trying to keep the price per kilometer under the planned US$50 million. Out of five companies that were invited to participate in the tender, only Siemens and Alstom delivered their proposals.
