Environment Minister Max Puig said that the extraction of sand from the Rio San Juan area in Maria Trinidad Sanchez has his department's authorization. He said that an environmental impact study was carried out previously by the Dutch company in charge of the operation. He said the extraction would not affect Playa Grande as they have identified sufficient sand banks in the area for the restructuring of other north coast beaches. Puig said that the restructuring would not have been necessary if breakwaters had not been built in areas such as Cabarete, not taking into account marine currents and causing the beach erosion. He said that the state now has to invest significant resources in order to correct what could have been avoided.

Tourism Minister Felix Jimenez said the plan is to create a 5km beach with 81,000 square meters of sand, with capacity for 20,000 people at one time. The Ministry has also authorized the development of high- rise buildings in the Malecon area, near the new beach that is to be restored.
