President Leonel Fernandez and German Chancellor Angela Merkel met in Berlin yesterday and agreed to draft an agreement aimed at providing greater guarantees for investors from both countries. The agreement, which was announced during Fernandez's two-day visit to Germany, seeks to provide a trustworthy judicial framework for investors and to enhance the business climate for German investors, as reported in Diario Libre.
Fernandez expressed an interest in creating the conditions to encourage more German investors to come to the DR. Merkel said that she saw opportunities in renewable energy areas. She said that bilateral relations with the DR were very good, and that 180,000 Germans had vacationed in the DR last year. She added that she was aware that around 12,000-15,000 Germans resided in the country and that there were many mixed marriages.
She thanked Fernandez for the role the DR played in the humanitarian response to the emergency in Haiti, and denied reports that Germany planned to cut its aid budget.
Before the meeting with Merkel, President Christian Wulff praised President Fernandez for the DR's solidarity towards Haiti. As reported in Diario Libre, both Fernandez and Wulff agreed that time and perseverance were needed to make progress in Haiti. They acknowledged that urgent action was needed to prevent an increase in the flow of economic refugees to the DR. President Fernandez called on the international community to redouble their efforts to help Haiti. Wulff also praised Fernandez for his active lobbying to help resolve the political crisis in Honduras. According to reports, Wulff described Fernandez as the "anchor of stability in the Caribbean." Wulff was speaking at the official welcome ceremony for Fernandez that took place in the Bellevue Presidential Palace, where the Fernandez received military honors corresponding to his rank. Later on, both heads of state held a private meeting, where, according to President Fernandez, they discussed drug trafficking and security issues.
