President Leonel Fernandez met with Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle yesterday during his two-day visit to Germany. During the meeting, Westerwelle stated that Latin America was one of the new Federal Government priority regions. Westerwelle says that the region is not only one of growth with enormous potential; it was also linked to Europe by common roots and values.
During his meeting with Westerwelle, President Fernandez stressed that it was particularly important to increase economic cooperation. He invited German companies to increase their investment in the DR. Fernandez highlighted the existence of the European Partnership Agreement (EPA) and the DR-CAFTA free trade agreement with the US, which makes the DR an especially attractive investment option.
President Fernandez said that the DR would back Germany in its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the period 2011-2012. The elections will take place in autumn 2010 during the 65th session of the General Assembly.
President Leonel Fernandez is the first Dominican statesman to make an official visit to Germany.
