66.5% of residents in the National District (Santo Domingo) say the city is unsafe or very unsafe. Only 30.3% consider the city very safe or safe, as reported in Diario Libre.
27.9% says they were direct victims of a crime last year, according to the Government Safety Poll carried out by the Santo Domingo Municipality Citizen Observatory. The study said that 31.6% did not report their case to the Police for the lack of confidence in the Police itself.
The numbers have increased significantly since April 2009 when 12.6% considered the city unsafe or very unsafe.
Nevertheless, the same poll indicated that there has been a minor decline in homicides.
City residents say that the main factors affecting the city are lack of safety (54.1%), traffic problems and drug consumption (40.4%). 61% say that crime is up, while 28% say it has remained the same.
