The Dominican Alliance Against Corruption (Adocco) is taking Santiago Mayor Jose Enrique Sued to justice, accusing him of irregularities when in office.
Earlier this year, journalist Esteban Rosario published a book "Corruption in Santiago Municipal Council" where he presents proof that RD$1.2 billion was wasted by the municipality in what he described as a "corruption network" made up of journalists, Catholic priests, Christian pastors, businessmen, builders, and others created by Jose Enrique Sued to buy silence and cover up corruption in his two-term municipal administration.
Adocco is now presenting proof to the Department for the Persecution of Administrative Corruption (DPCA) that Sued misused RD$500 million of municipal funds. Adocco general coordinator Julio Cesar de la Rosa Tiburcio says that Sued ran the municipal council as if it were his own farm, benefiting his relatives and friends with contracts in violation of Procurement Law 340-06.
De la Rosa said that Licelott Marte, the director of the Chamber of Accounts, the government body in charge of auditing government departments, has not published the results of the audit with the irregularities that were detected because she is protecting Sued, who belongs to the same political party as her. De la Rosa said that Marte has distinguished herself at the head of the Chamber of Accounts for "not doing anything."
