The Presidential Controller Office and the Department for the Prevention of Administrative Corruption (DPCA) have opened an investigation into the Crafts Promotion and Development office (Fodearte), a government department apparently created to benefit a former PRD deputy and activist. Investigative journalist Nuria Piera picked out the case of organization director Octavia Medina as an example of nepotism and waste of government funds. Medina complained that she had been a victim of tenacious political persecution to damage her reputation.
She said that Nuria Piera allowed herself to be used by the president of the Bloque Institucional Social Democrata (BIS), Jose Francisco Pena Guaba, a former PRD faction with which she is engaged in a dispute for the control of Fodearte. She said the problems began when Pena Guaba appointed a group of his own followers to posts in the department, and she opposed the appointments.
Hotoniel Bonilla of the DPCA said he did not know of that department's existence.
Medina denied there was corruption in her department, saying that it was managed by a board made up of representatives of the Presidency, Tourism, Industry & Commerce, and Economy Ministries, and Infotep, as reported in El Caribe.
