Thanks to a strong second half, the DR basketball team defeated Panama 63-56 in the 2010 Centrobasket Championship taking place at the Palacio de los Deportes. The DR was losing 34-25 in the first half. Kelvin Pena had 18 points, nine of them in the final quarter to lead the Dominican offense that had serious problems in the first 30 minutes. Pena made a three-pointer with 1:56 left to put them up 59-55 and then baskets by Manuel Fortuna and Pena after the turnovers by Panama sealed the win. Jack Michael Martinez helped Pena with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
In the first quarter Panama had an effective long-range attack, led by Danilo Pinnock with 9 points to end up 16-13.
The Dominican offense could not find the rim in the second quarter and stayed away while Panama had a better attack, combining their three-point offense with points in the paint to finish the first half up 34-25. Pinnock had 12 points for Panama.
In the third quarter both teams had problems executing their offense and ended 13-9 in favor of the Dominicans who closed in 43-38. Danilo Pinnock led Panama with 21 points.
Other teams that won on the first day were Cuba, the British Virgin Islands and Belize.
