View Full Version : Classicos Taking Advantage of the Gringos???

Got this off of DR1, this is really disturbing news if true....maybe it's time for a gringo boycott of the place.

Can any locals on here verify this purported fleecing of the tourists????

CLASSICIO'S CURRENCY? What the FU$$
I guess that the Clasicos disco in Sosua has come up with the ultimate way to take advantage of the Gringo Tourist..

A few of my buddies were in town last weekend, so i met up with them for a few days in Sosua..It first started with the increase to 150 pesos to get in the disco..I can live with that because they give you a ticket for a free drink.. But when it was my turn to grab the presidentes, i was shocked at the 900 pesos for 6.http://www.dr1.com/forums/images/smilies/surprised.gif.I am far from a cheap person, but there is nowhere that i know of in Sosua that rapes you for 150 pesos for a presidente..

O.K. then, you can say that if you dont like the prices dont go..but here is the kicker..When the bartender gives me my change, it's two 50 peso, round plastic, after one money..Yea, they gave me change in their own money.. Who the hell does this Guy think he is? Now even though i was going to tell the girl to keep the change, i ask her for my change in pesos..She says that is what they give small change in..So i tell he to keep her beer and give me my money back..She gets all rattled and calls over one of the Kings henchmen..He starts rambling the same bull as the girl... It's not worth the argument, so i just push those after one money crap on the floor and walk away..I just cant believe that this place can get away with this crap...The Place will never see another $$ from me..Boy, I cant wait to the new 2nd in command mayor makes things tough on that placehttp://www.dr1.com/forums/images/smilies/cheeky.gif

In between all the nickel-diming of gringos and many nights Classico looking like a club in Miami's lil' Haiti, i'm hearing from several people that they've had enough of the place ... and these were guys who loved Classico.

So let's see, many mongers were never the disco "type" so they never really went often and obviously won't be going any moreso now.

Now, due to several reasons they're turning off mongers who liked going to the disco and spending lots of time and money in there.

You know who they'll be left with, the mongers who go there but get loaded off Henny in their rooms before they hit the club and buy maybe one drink in there 'til they find their TLN chick.

(of course this being the DR, the Classico response will then be to raise the entrance and beer price even more)

My burning question would be: Is this small change policy being used both in Merengue (downstairs club) and Classicos (upstairs disco)???

If it is only in the disco where they are giving the change in "funny money," I guess I wont't be going upstairs anymore!!!

Also, is 100 pesos ($3.70 US) really "small change?" I don't think so....

The only other place I've seen charge $150 pesos for a beer
in the DR was Jose O'Shays in Cabarete on St. Pat's Day shaking down the tourists...myself, I bought one beer there and went next door and bought my beer there for 70 pesos less...

I was looking forward to partying in Merengue on July 21, but I might have to make other plans....

It's not like the cover charge has nothing to do with the price of a Presidente and then they just give you a free drink.
The price of admission is the cost of 1 Presidente.
So if 1 costs 150, of course 6 is going to cost 900.

Giving change that can only be spent with this company is ridiculous. :icontd:

I was given the funny money when I was there in June but I just used it towards another drink.

i was given the funny money as well, its like a credit towards another. big deal. its not like you breaking a huge peso note and you getting 20 funny moneys back.

its a 50 pesos small laminate coupon thingy. its not like they trying to pass it off as real pesos.

i declined one time and she said no problemo and gave me a real 50 peso note as i was on my way out.

same thing happened to me a month ago, its a laminated small 50 peso note that i didnt really look at because it was dark in the club. in the morning i had 3 of them so i left them at my girls house with my clothes and other stuff i usually leave there so i can travel light on the plane. i didnt really get annoyed but im sure its a change issue, 50 peso notes are hard to come by, especially when you dont bother to go to the bank and get them so you have change for your customers.

I could live with getting a 50 pesos token as change, but it seems to me that anything above that amount should be given back in real money.

And if they don't have enough 50 peso notes to give change back, why did the owner raise his drink prices in the first place???

This is the DR, not South Beach, so where do they get off charging over $4 US for a beer??? Between owning the Sosua Casino, Merengue, and Classicos, I guess the person in control has an undying lust for lucre...

Yeah this has happened to me before. Seems that there's always a shortage of small bills in the DR. Though this mostly seems to occur in the tourist areas. I've never experienced this shortage in Santiago or Santo Domingo. Go figure.

Add to this the fact that you're in a town that lives by fleecing the gringo, and you have a recipe for peso chicanery. I try to combat it by not paying for drinks with big bills. Which is sometimes a problem because I use the ATMs. And they mostly give out 1000 and 500 peso bills. Bummer.

But I don't think that boycotting Classicos is the answer. Mainly because, as someone already stated, the owners likely won't react in a way that will be beneficial to anyone, including themselves i.e. raising admission and drink prices. Welcome to Dominican Business 101.

You see, the dominicans who make their living from gringos (especially mongers) figure that all of us are wealthy, and that there's no end to how much they can fleece us out of our money. And it doesn't help that Classicos basically has a monopoly as far as disco-type places go in Sosua. It's been around as long as I've been mongering there. And has outlasted every other upstart venue that has popped up. X-Club has opened and closed at least three times within the past four or five years. And I'm pretty sure that they'll be closing again before long.

So really and truly, Classicos has no competition in Sosua within its niche. I remember when they charged 80 pesos for a presidente, and it was free to get in. But even though they've raised their prices and added an entrance fee, I personally haven't seen a drop in their business. Quite the contrary. With each of my visits, it seems to get more and more packed with mongers on the weekends. So it seems that mongers don't mind paying higher prices to go up to the disco to drink, dance, and pick up chicas. In fact, mongers like me and my wingmen, who don't drink a lot, hardly even notice the increased drink prices.

Bottom line, you'll always have mongers who aren't bothered by the $4 entrance fee, or the $4 beers. Especially since there's always a new crop of mongers and AI guests who don't know any better. Therefore, Classicos really has no incentive to change their prices. And as far as the change issue. Well, like I said, that's just another way they fleece us gringos. It's bad business, and I'm not condoning that shit. But it hardly surprises me.

What can you do about it? Well, I guess you can try and get change before you hit the disco so you won't have to pay with big bills. And I guess you could do most of your drinking outside the disco before hand. Hell, the disco really doesn't start popping until around 1am anyway. Or you can just not go to Classicos. Quite a few members here prefer to hang out, drink, and chase chicas at the surrounding bars. Personally, I prefer Classicos. But like I said, I really don't drink much anymore.

You have other options. I believe you'll have better luck utilizing those alternate options than you will attempting to try and change the way Classicos does business.

For many of us we remember these Sosua Casino(after 1) plastic thiggies, and still have them as keepsakes. I'm not going to add any more to this discussion. I already did that over a month ago in my OP about what Classicos was doing, not only to the tourist but those that live here. However, as DCIronman stated in his post, many of you do not know the Dominican Business 101 in this country, and this is just the beginning when it comes to Sosua.
Now I’ll go in my corner and be quiet!:wackoff:

Speaking of taking advantage of gringos, you don't want to be going there without pesos.
I noticed on the bill at Merengue that they also list the price in some other currencies and the exchange rates are brutal.

And if they don't have enough 50 peso notes to give change back,They should get some casino chips for change.
The customer can gamble with them or cash them in. :iconTU:

I used to go into Classicos almost every night. My breaking point was when they went from 100 to 150 pesos for both entry and a beer. With places like El Flow and Rumba right down the street I can get a grande for under 100pesos and see the same chicas at the bottom of the stairs going up and down.

An import beer at my local bar costs $4.50. Im not paying that for a local beer in a 3rd world country.

For a special occasion sure I might go into Classicos for a drink or 2 with some friends. I will be sure we all are already good and buzzed so they at best get 1 or 2 drinks max out of any of us.

I hard to imagine Classicos going out of business but if they keep pushing their customers away anything is possible.

Simple solution. Use your card over the teller counter (much safer anyway) and ask for 1000 in 50s and 1000 in 100s and no fucking bluenotes in the rest. This is what I always do. Won't work at night but who wants to be walking around with a lot of cash at night?

I can see the savings for sure but I dont drink enough to be willing to pay $225 for a bottle of Grey Goose in Classicos. Now add in the $150RD entry fee per person and all the red bulls and your in for a steep bill. Sure it will be cheaper than if you were in a NYC club in any VIP lounge but theres a big difference between NYC and Sosua.

Im not saying anyone is a cheap bastard its their money to spend however they want for their fantasy. I wont knock the next guy for paying his chicas $20,000 pesos a night if thats what they want to do. Just dont be upset when someone else bangs the same chica after they leave for 1500 pesos.

What a load of bullshit!! Of course it is not nessecary to impress a chica to get her to sleep with you - all it takes is pesos - i'm sure undacovabrotha knows that. Some people roll different than others, plain and simple. Did you ever stop to consider that maybe he does that for his own enjoyment and not to impress anyone. He is on vacation for fuck's sake!! Enjoy yourself and do what makes you happy.

At a baseball game you can sit in a box on the 1st base line for $300 or in the right field bleachers for $15. Do you think anyone that does not sit in the bleachers is doing so to impress everyone in the ball park? Maybe it is just because some people have more money than others and enjoy the view.

Its just an observation. Everyone likes to roll in a different way, and it doesn't matter at all to me. Relating it to baseball... well, we all watch the same game, maybe the point of view is different, but the game is the same.

I do know this, the price to play goes up as you climb the steps. You start buying expensive bottles of liquor and sit in comfy private rooms and it goes even higher. No problem if that's what you like. We all have our fantasies to fulfill....

They raised the price. It's a simple matter. You pay or not. It's not going to stop you from getting a chica. It's not going to stop you from having a good time.

It's a business like everything else in Sousa. They way you make your voz heard is not going.

I don't like paying a premium price for an average product, be it a presidente or a Ho. But I don't let it blow my high, especially not on vacation.

I think we can all agree Classico is not an average product. The whole scene there is unrivaled on the North Coast... I don't like paying 150 pesos for a beer, but I will just to get in the mix, the music, the chicas, the sheer rush of having all of that sexuality around.... man... time to get back in there.

I agree Roy, but I just hope it doesn't go the way of Disco Help in Rio.
They started raising their prices and the majority of fine girls stop going (although that was due to other factors, not just price)

Now when I do go to Classicos I'm not going to spend my time fuming about how much I paid for this beer.

Guys, please stop bitching about the price of a beer. Think about it.

Roundtrip Airline Tickets,.......$500.00
Hotel 2 weeks,....................$700.00
Food.................................$250.00

Daily Pussy Parade at 10 to 1 Ratio.......................FUCKING PRICELESS!!!!!!

None of us are nowhere near the poverty level nor on food stamps. (That is an assumption) Classico´s upstairs or downstairs, we (because of our success in life) have the opportunity to enjoy this activity when we want & how often, & then we leave.................these folks must stay as this is a part of their life.

Is there anyone on the ground in Sosua that can confirm this?
I always laugh when I see this asked :eek:

Funny how upset people get over simple bullshit. If you got "full pockets" and want to spend them in Classicos so be it.

Pointing out the obvious that a guy sitting in VIP of Classicos with a bottle of grey goose is going to be more of a target for a criminal than the guy drinking 85 peso Presidentes at the bottom of the stairs just seems obvious to me.

Dont be mad because of it. Anyone whos looking for extra attention in Sosua can find it rather easily.

14 days with say be up in time to eat 7 included breakfast which for me would be more like 4 but say you buy 7 breakfasts 14 lunches and 14 dinners. that is 35 meals.

Plus food for snacks like a appetizer here or there or some wings and a few room snacks from the Playero like some sausage and cheese and nuts to go with the drinks.

That would put my 14 day food bill at $500 plus

When you can get Grandes for 60-100 pesos that makes beer pretty cheap.

Sosua is changing

D,

You are soooooooo right about that. That's why me and my crew have decided to do it in various other places. One positive change that is in it's formative stages is Hotel Colibri trying to do things in a big way. Seemingly, "TJ" is trying his best to appeal to Sosua's greatest asset: THE MONGER! If he is successful in his endeavors, there will be another viable option in Sosua (a reasonably-priced hotel that has become extremely chica-friendly including having a fine stable of chicas onsite, it also has a restaurant and the food is off the chain!) I will elaborate more in my TR.

I think we can all agree Classico is not an average product. The whole scene there is unrivaled on the North Coast... I don't like paying 150 pesos for a beer, but I will just to get in the mix, the music, the chicas, the sheer rush of having all of that sexuality around.... man... time to get back in there.

Each can have his own opinion but to me it's just a fancy wrapper for the same pussy one can get driving down the street, stopping and picking up a girl on her way from the colmado..

In the end you shower naked, yo get blown naked and fuck naked...

Any money spent there is money spent on fools gold (to me).

One of the things I just love is to get them on the beach and fuck them in the sea, the hot sun, the sweet smell of oiled up bodies, the perfect view of their assets... then the sweet taste of their mouths and tongues and the hot syrupy feel of their pussy milking your cock in the cool water..

And this is the reason a lot of guys go to Classicos, including myself. Sometimes it's about the presentation. Watching a chica dance is part of my screening process. It's a pretty good indication of how she'll perform in the sack. Therefore, she has to show me that she can move those hips the way I like before I even think about taking her home.

Those that don't like to listen to latin music, and dance (or watch chicas dancing), probably won't understand this.

Its not about, getting a chica and taking her to your room, anyone can do that, the chicas are secondary, they are like wall paper. You are guaranteed to get laid. Its about hanging with your amigo's and having a great time and going to the show, and believe me Classico's, is the show.

For whatever it's worth, here are the prices in a small, not-very-fancy (but with FINE girls) strip joint i was at last night with a few friends ....

$8 for a bottle of Heineken

$10 for shots (Patron/Kamikaze/whatever)

When you're with a group of guys and people start buying rounds and shots, the amount of money you can spend in about 3 hours is crazy. Add in the tips to the bartender chicas and of course the strippers, and each of us could have bought a plane ticket to DR. Did i regret it, no, cuz if i'm gonna go i'm gonna go to have a blast and not hold back ... no point in going with crabs in your pockets. Still, it's thousands of dudes who are regulars at strip joints and have no clue how much better spent that money can be on a trip somewhere. So sad.

BTW ... the spot was by 31st ave and 31st street in Astoria. It's been there forever. Used to be Johnny Jay's back in the days .. now i think it's Mermaids. Laid back place with no hustle or pressure from the girls or management (unlike Riviera which is 10 minutes away on Steinway Street). No bitch begging you for a dollar or to buy a bottle or lap dance and the girls actually come by and thank you if you tipped them while they were dancing. I'm not a big strip joint guy but if you are and are looking for a low-key spot, you should check it out.

Ab-so-phucking-lutely. I've never had a bad time in there. And nowhere else affords the opportunity to really accurately gauge how much fun a chica is going to be in the room. I can't even count the times that all the grinding and making out in the club has led right into a balls-to-the-walls all-out smash-fest afterwards. The best foreplay you can possibly get anywhere (at least now that Help is closed for good...):(

Classicos good for latin dancing? From my limited exp there's a lot of non latin music and a very slippery floor.. also it's crowded so a good salsashow ain't gonna happen..

I realize the comparisons are accurate, but this is not Astoria, it is the D.R. where I buy cases of grande Bohemia for 900 pesos. I'm not blasting anyone on spending money... but the justification SHOULD NOT BE what the SAME SHIT COSTS IN THE U.S.

I like some of the discos in Cabarete that play different dance music other than that "house" music....gets pretty annoying after awhile , same beat....boom, boom, boom...

(Yes, I get the subliminal message...I must puncture my eardrums with hot needles to stop the pain).

Classicos plays too much of that mindless house music for my tastes....

I'd rather listen to Merengue, Salsa, Bachata, and older disco stuff like Michael Jackson. I like ClubX because the DJ will play your requests...he played Bob Marley for me a few times...

LOL...I've never had a problem there. Drinks are way cheaper than Classicos, and the waiters there get your drinks in a flash...:drunk:

More of a Dominican crowd than Classicos, but that doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Well quite honestly, you aint gonna see much salsa dancing outside of the Capital. So I'm not gonna begrudge Classicos for its lack thereof. But I learned, from a chica, how to dance bachata in Classicos years ago. Of course, I've sharpened my skills by dancing all over the country (and in Colombia too) since then. But it I learned the basics at Classicos.

I guess it depends upon the crowd, but I always seem to be able to get my bachata and my merenque on when in Classicos. And I also like Reggaeton as well. The DJ always seems to play a lot of latin music, along with the techno and hip hop.

I even hear salsa occasionally there. But I can never find a partner skilled enough to salsa with me. The only exception being Adriana. Most here know her. Short, cute, Capitalena with a pretty nice fake rack. And with lots of attitude. Can salsa her ass off, that one.

I hear what you're saying..

My situation being what it is, we usually go out to tipico's or fiesta's... over the years there's no artist we haven't seen there.. real Dominican parties with dancing deep into the night..

At those venues it's strictly latin, including some salsa.

To me a lady needn't be able to dance salsa, as I will just guide her through if she has rythm

Absolutely, and i apologize if you thought my post was justifying $5 beers in Classico as that certainly wasn't my intent. You know me better than that, Roy. ;) (what does kitty litter go for down there anyway) :D

That being said, Classico may very well feel very little backlash on this issue cuz the simple fact is if someone's gonna spend several hundred dollars on a ticket and several hundred more on a room for a week and several hundred more for a week's worth of chicas, he's probably not gonna let a $1 difference in beer price dictate if he goes to Classico or not .. and the owner probably knows this just like you and i do.

Kitty litter is available at the Super Mercado on the main road. There is a pet section in the back left. They have nice leashes as well. Basic litter, unused is about 1 1/2 times the U.S. price. I believe it would be possible to sell some of my litter I've had in the past (with corresponding video) for a considerable sum more. But that's another business venture all together.

It's no different than the chica that fucks her chulo and gives him money, then she stops by in the daytime when her gringo buddy is in town, fucks him for the occasional 500 pesos for the salon, and then goes out to Pedro Clisante and demands 3000 pesos during prime time.
