President Leonel Fernandez visited the German port city of Hamburg yesterday and addressed a meeting with members of the Confederation of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He invited German business owners to invest in industry, renewable energy, tourism, apparel and hi-tech in the DR, making the most of the European Partnership Agreement and DR-CAFTA, the free trade agreement with the US and Central America. He announced the signing of a new legal framework that will enhance guarantees for German investors. He stressed that the DR has been proven to have one of the most stable economies in Latin America and how the international financial crisis did not affect banking in the DR.
President Fernandez described Puerto Plata as "another state of the German Federal Republic" because of the large number of Germans who have taken up residence there.
Frank Horch, president of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce said that President Fernandez was the first Caribbean President to have visited the chamber. He expressed his hope that their strong ties will become even stronger following the visit.
During his visit to Hamburg, President Fernandez visited the city council where he was received by the city Mayor Ole Von Beust, who congratulated Fernandez for his leadership and mediating skills in the Honduras crisis and the conflict between Venezuela and Colombia.
