"Metro Minister" Diandino Pena has announced the inter-connection of the fourth underground station of the second metro line under construction in Santo Domingo. This connects the tunnels under John F. Kennedy Avenue with Av. Abraham Lincoln. The tunneling crossed from the station at Ortega y Gasset to the one at Lope de Vega and has now reached the Lincoln stop. Pena, who has been dubbed "Metro Minister" by the media, is the director of the Transport Reorganization Office (OPRET), better known as the metro office.
Listin Diario reports that Pena said that despite the economic difficulties, in the past six months construction of the metro has advanced 3kms. The next stage involves tunneling for the stations at Winston Churchill and then on to Kennedy again. He said that there would also be stations at Luperon, Nunez de Caceres and Defillo streets. Others are scheduled for Leopoldo Navarro, Av. Duarte (Escuela Republica Dominicana), Josefa Brea, Albert Thomas and off the 17 Bridge. The second line will be 22kms long. Pena said that the continuation of works depends on funds that may be available later this year.
Pena said they have not been able to convince a consortium to take over the construction on a concession basis. He revealed that no one had won the tender for the construction because of lack of funding on the international capital markets. He said that President Fernandez is making the most of his visits to Germany and France to seek financing to continue the construction.
