Police Chief Major General Rafael Guillermo Guzman Fermin says that the recent increase in contract killings is a consequence of the persecution of drug traffickers that intensified in the country since last August. He said that airplane drug drops are down 93% since August. He said when the authorities confiscate hundreds of kilos of cocaine, drug traffickers resort to kidnapping to cover their debts and many killings take place within criminal organizations.
Guzman Fermin described the DR as a safe country that suffers from a perceived lack of security. He said that when he was appointed chief of the Police three years ago, an average of 35 cars were stolen each day, and this is now down to four. He said that the number of motorcycles stolen per day has decreased from 55 to 7 over the same period. Furthermore, he highlighted the Police's 100% track record in solving kidnappings. He also mentioned that 7 robberies per week used to take place at gasoline stations, and that these are now rare. Moreover, he said that they used to receive reports of 7-8 robberies at ATMs per day, claiming that it has been a long time since an ATM has been robbed.
