Tampa Bay pitcher Rafael Soriano is replacing Mariano Rivera of the Yankees in the American Major League Baseball All-Stars team roster. The game will be held on Tuesday, 13 July at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. Rivera will not play because of injuries to his left side and right knee. This is Soriano's first All-Star Game.
The 30-year-old Dominican ended the season with a 1.65 earned run average and 2-0 mark in 33 appearances, going 23-for-24 in save opportunities. Over 32 2/3 innings, he has struck out 29, walked seven and held opponents to a .172 average.
While Robinson Cano, second base for the Yankees, had made the All-Star Game list for the American League, yesterday it was announced he would sit out the game due to an injury.
Other Dominicans chosen to play in the game are:
Playing for the American League, Vladimir Guerrero (rangers, designated batter), Neftali Feliz (Rangers, pitcher), Fausto Carmona (Indians, pitcher) and Jose Valverde (Tigers, pitcher) and Rafael Soriano (Tampa Bay, pitcher).
Reserves: David Ortiz (Red Sox), Alex Rodriguez (Yankees) and Adrian Beltre (Red Sox).
Playing for the National League will be Dominicans Albert Pujols (Cardinals, first base), Jose Reyes (Mets, shortstop), Hanley Ramirez (Marlins, shortstop) and Ubaldo Jimenez (Rockies, pitcher).
Fans in the US and around the world cast their votes for the 2010 All-Star Game.
