Tourism shows steady growth

The Dominican Republic is the leading tourist destination in the Caribbean, according to Arturo Villanueva of the National Hotels and Restaurants Association (Asonahores). According to Villanueva, the country has experienced a growth in the number of tourist arrivals for nine straight months. The gap left by the decrease in the number of tourists from the traditional countries has been filled by tourists from other countries such as Russia, according to Villanueva. The flow of tourists to the Dominican Republic has increased as a result of advertising campaigns overseas funded by both public and private sources. In a television interview, Villanueva pointed out that the absence of tourists from countries like Spain, hard hit by the economic crisis, and France, for example, has been replaced by tourists from new markets like Russia and other European countries, as well as from South America. He added that a 1.2% fall in foreign tourists last month was more than compensated for by Dominicans, both local and from overseas, who were enjoying their summer holidays.
