Higuey bus strike

Passengers traveling on Sichoprola buses from Higuey to Santo Domingo had to take taxis to La Romana today after drivers and their assistants went on strike to demand their share of the profits of the Sichoprola bus syndicate that unites bus owners on the route. From La Romana, the commuters continued on to Santo Domingo with buses of another syndicate. Sichoprola has a self-imposed monopoly on the route from the capital city to Higuey and Punta Cana. The drivers and their assistants demand labor benefits, such as severance payments, medical insurance, and a share in profits, among others.
