The DR defeated Cuba 85-71, grabbing at least silver and achieving the main goal that led to the country to host Centrobasket. The DR team is now a semi-finalist in a tournament that qualifies the team for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship, a pre-Olympic event. The DR will play for the gold today against archrival Puerto Rico. The game will be played at 8:30pm. Cuba will face Panama for the bronze medal at 6pm. Jack Michael Martinez was the most outstanding player in the first quarter, but Cuba went on to take the lead in the second quarter. The Dominicans came from behind with a 13-4 rally that granted them the first half 39-37. FIBA reports that the Dominicans took control of the third quarter 29-10, to stay on top, 68-47. For the last ten minutes, the bench took care of securing the victory.
The tournament was extended for one day when major problems with the air conditioning required a portable system to be installed at last minute.
