President Leonel Fernandez and US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton held a 40-minute meeting at the Department of State yesterday. The DR Presidency reported discussing coordinating efforts to improve strategies to combat organized crime and drug trafficking. Clinton said that there was a need to give greater visibility to the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative being promoted by President Obama and the efforts of the regional governments that are committed to fighting these evils. "There should be total transparency from all governments when it comes to fighting this scourge", said Clinton, as reported on the Presidency website.
She reiterated President Obama's support for Dominican leader's proposal to convene a ministerial level meeting in Santo Domingo at the end of this year in order to discuss regional policies on the issue. As well as the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean nations, the United States, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and the Central American nations would also take part in this meeting. The event, which would be organized in the framework of the Inter-American Commission to Fight Drugs, part of the Organization of American States, would establish the basis for a broader summit.
For Fernandez and Clinton, there is a need to send clear signals about the United States and the Dominican Republic's commitment to pursue and combat organized crime, drug trafficking and the violence that they generate.
