The Senate is scheduled to discuss the legislative proposal that deals with the Judicial Power Law that regulates the workings, composition and administrative and disciplinary functions of the Judiciary. The law also seeks to assure a transparent and objective process of appointments, promotions and hierarchy of the judges, according to the principles of the judicial service established and organized by the Constitution.
The initiative, presented by Senator Charlie Mariotti, defines as the Council, the body that manages and administrates all aspects regarding budgets, finances and administrative tasks of the Judicial Power, which currently fall under the Supreme Court of Justice. As the top disciplinary organ of the Judicial Power, it will be responsible for establishing the level of responsibility and of application of the corresponding punishments for judges, with the exception of the Supreme Court judges, for committing mistakes in the exercise of their duties, including the officials and employees of the Judicial Power.
The Congress has until 26 July to pass this legislation to comply with the 2010 Constitution.
Yesterday, the Senate could not meet for lack of quorum - only 12 of 32 senators turned up to work.
