In an interview with the Corripio media group yesterday, French Ambassador to the DR Roland Dubertrand said that an estimated 5,000 French expatriates are living in the Dominican Republic. He said the French Embassy has 3,000 French citizens registered. Of these, 2,000 are living in Las Terrenas, Samana, where he says there is a grade school authorized by the French Ministry of Education with 150 students. He says that French people make up 8% of the population in that area.
Dubertrand said the DR has more French immigrants than any other Caribbean country, even than Haiti, as reported in Hoy. He estimated that there were 1,000 Dominicans in France, most living in Paris. But he says that migration to French territories in the Americas has been increasing, namely Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guiana, where an estimated 10,000 Dominicans live.
