Once again, the Senator-elect for La Altagracia province, Amable Aristy Castro, is in no rush to take up his seat in Congress. Aristy has been elected senator for his province on two previous occasions, but has preferred to delegate duties to a replacement so he may continue in what he has said is a more lucrative post, secretary general of the Dominican Municipal League (LMD). Now, he again says he will wait until January to decide whether to leave his role as head of the LMD, the government body that channels the funds for city bodies nationwide.
He said that the new head of the LMD will be elected on 26 January and he is in no rush, while highlighting the fact that the LMD handles RD$809 million a year, as reported in Diario Libre. He said he plans to remain at the helm of the LMD through at least January 2011.
Today's Clave newspaper describes the LMD as "one of the government departments most criticized for its lack of operations, but that continues being very attractive to the political parties because of the quantity of resources it handles."
