Renting passports and IDs

Jesuit priest Regino Martinez, coordinator of the Jesuit Border Solidarity movement, has reported that drivers covering the Santiago-Dajabon transport route rent IDs and Dominican passports to undocumented Haitians to help them cross the border. Martinez said that the drivers do this with the knowledge of the military officers in the area. He accused them of turning the 18 checkpoints between Dajabon and Santiago into tollbooths. "This is a new method of trafficking in undocumented Haitians. The drivers and bus attendants hand the passports and IDs to the guards and underneath they deliver the toll in cash," the priest told Hoy. He said that the tolls are collected on Monday and Friday, when there is greater movement of illegal commuters. He called on the military authorities to investigate this situation.
