The Public Health authorities have stepped up their prevention campaigns now that the number of deaths from dengue fever is at a high of 26. The outbreak has been more serious this year due to the recent unusually heavy rains. Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez will launch the regional prevention campaign in Santiago with activities in the community of Hato del Yaque, along with the barrios of La Herradura, Barrio Nuevo, Villa Liberacion, and La Otra Banda because of the high incidence of dengue that has been registered in these areas.
In Santiago, Rosa Maria Morel of the Arturo Grullon Children's Hospital said that they are admitting 12 to 15 youngsters affected by dengue every day. Of the 26 deaths registered nationwide, nine have occurred in Santiago.
In Santo Domingo, Dr. Clemente Terrero said that the number of cases at the Robert Reid Cabral Children's Hospital is up, and a new ward had to be prepared for the increased number of patients requiring hospitalization.
A Public Health Ministry press release reported that 100,000 people, including military personnel and volunteers, would participate in the weekend campaign. The mobilization will include prevention, education, spraying and cleaning up of places where the Aedes Aegipyti mosquitoes can breed.
The Ministry of Public Health will also lead dengue prevention campaigns in the National District and province of Santo Domingo and on Sunday in San Cristobal.
