Brazilian Foreign Trade Secretary Welber Barral is expected in the DR on Monday, 19 July to promote bilateral trade and advance towards a road map for an agreement with Mercosur, the leading South American trading bloc. Bilateral trade between Brazil and the DR reached US$155 million in the first half of this year compared to US$115 million for the whole of 2009, most of which is made up of Brazilian exports to the DR.
"Nevertheless this is far from the enormous potential we must maximize", said Barral who is scheduled to meet government officials and private sector representatives.
Barral added that several Brazilian companies were interested in investing in the Dominican Republic since the country has privileged access to the US and the European Union markets for certain goods.
"The Dominican Republic can act as a bridge for expanding Brazilian exports to the US and Europe and many of our businessmen and Dominicans are interested in exploiting those opportunities", said Barral.
Brazil is also interested in expanding trade with the Caribbean and "Santo Domingo is a very good starting point", said Barral, who revealed that Brazil's development bank would soon increase its credit line to the Dominican Republic to finance one billion US dollars worth of Brazilian exports.
With other sources of foreign funding drying up, the Fernandez administration has benefited from export financing from the Brazilian export bank, namely for works under construction by Odebrecht, such as the Duarte Corridor.
