Jose Figueroa Agosto's arrest comes two days after President Leonel Fernandez returned from meetings in Washington, D.C. during which
President Barack Obama stressed that "more needed to be done" to fight drug trafficking when informing the press about the talks at the White House.
There is speculation that Jose Figueroa's arrest had been agreed on, as commented on Carmen Imbert Brugal Matutino Alternativo and Gobierno de la Manana radio talk shows on Monday morning.
Following Tono Lena's arrest a couple of weeks before President Leonel Fernandez, Police chief Guillermo Guzman Fermin and DNCD chief Rolando Rosado traveled to Puerto Rico to meet with the Puerto Rican police and federal authorities.
According to news reports, on his most recent trip abroad Fernandez traveled with his chief of military corps General Hector Belisario Medina Medina and deputy director of the National Investigations Department Victor Crispin.
In its headline on Figueroa and Felix's arrests, Listin Diario asks "Who are their accomplices in the DR?"
In Puerto Rico on Sunday, representing the Presidency at the press conference called by Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuno to announce the arrest, Rafael Nunez, press secretary for President Fernandez said when asked about corruption in the DR, "there will be no sacred cows in this case." "In our country, no one is above the law."
Police Chief Rafael Guillermo Guzman Fermin and chief of the National Drug Control Department Rolando Rosario traveled to San Juan for the announcement at the Puerto Rican government headquarters.
So far, as in the previous case of Colonel Ernesto Quirino Castillo, tried in a New York court for major drug trafficking operations based in the DR, there has been little information forthcoming or arrests of any of Figueroa Agosto's accomplices in the higher-ranking echelons of the Dominican government.
Lawyer Francisco Alvarez Valdez, member of civic group Participacion Ciudadana, told Hoy that Figueroa Agosto's arrest "in no way solves the Dominican case." He said that Figueroa Agosto will not come to the DR because he has cases pending with the Puerto Rican justice system. His girlfriend Sobeida Felix Morel, who he said would come back to the DR, will just be one more person accused of asset laundering or complicity with laundering. "I still do not see any of those who will stand trial in the case who can be accused of drug trafficking," he told Hoy. In the case, only Figueroa faces charges for violation of Law 50-88 on Drugs.
Speculation is rife, however, and it continues on the Internet and among friends and on Internet blogs such as La Cucaracha que Mea. www.diariolibre.com/noticias_det.php?id=191854
In the DR, several people with links to Figueroa have been murdered in the past six months. These include Police colonel Jose Amado Gonzalez y Gonzalez, Omar Ramon Antigua Polanco, inmate Jose Gabriel Arias and Ruben Soto Hayet, owner of La Francesa bakery.
In Puerto Rico, there is also speculation about the identity of his accomplices in Puerto Rico where he walked from the high security jail with forged release papers in 1999.
