The DR is ranked sixth in the medals list at the Central American and Caribbean Games taking place in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. The DR won eight bronze and three silver medals in the first day of competition. The silver medals were won by Guillermina Candelario and Ronald Pena in weightlifting and Santos Amado in judo.
Interestingly, Dominicans Jose Vasquez and Leydi German, a married couple, both won bronze medals in judo at the Games.
Cuba has been the winner of the games for years, but will not be participating in the 21st Games.
