The president of the Leon Jimenes Group, Jose Leon Asensio argued yesterday that unity is needed to fight the vicious circle of crime, joblessness, poverty, corruption and drug trafficking. He called for a change in the economic model when speaking at the monthly luncheon of the Association of Industries of the DR (AIRD). Leon said that "the new model that emerges from the collective sum of all our thinking has to reflect the thoughts of all of our society". He said that the existence of a high percentage of joblessness is the great challenge.
With President Leonel Fernandez and First Lady Margarita Cedeno present during this luncheon celebrating the 48th anniversary of the AIRD, Jose Leon called upon all Dominicans to contribute to the new economy, saying that it was not possible at this time to stand on the sidelines or remain undaunted by the reality of the situation. Nor, he said, was it correct to point a finger at the government as responsible for the problems the country is facing. He discarded that the society should wait for the political parties to provide solutions.
Leon said that the two great challenges ahead are the unemployment rate of 15% and the poverty rate that he set at 40%. The head of the one of the nation's largest industrial groups says that education and health have not received sufficient attention and are a heavy burden on the country's progress.
Finally, he said that although there have been important advances over the past 50 years, there are important backwardness and competitive disadvantages in facing a world that demands better education of its people.
