Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez warned yesterday that authorities are extending the outreach program of prevention of mosquito-spread diseases. Authorities will be active for six more weeks to educate the public to destroy mosquito breeding areas. The Ministry has activated the System of Epidemiological Alert to reduce outbreaks of dengue and malaria as a result of the rains. According to Diario Libre, the official said historically the greatest number of cases of dengue have occurred in August and September. But early rains have caused 23 fatalities so far this year all over the country.
The Minister of Health said that in the first seven months of 2010 there have been 5,340 cases of dengue reported, a number that is higher than those reported in 2009 for the same date.
Regarding malaria, Rojas Gomez said that of every 10 cases in the country, almost 8 are Haitian citizens.
The official also said there has been an increase in cases of leptospirosis, a disease he tied to garbage and wastes. "Today we are sending out a circular asking the people to avoid entering the Isabela and Ozama rivers, and to avoid walking barefooted where there is mud", added the minister.
The Minister of Health says the activation of the System of Epidemiological Alert facilitates monitoring the health situation at 38 points nationwide.
