Julio Cesar Valentin (PLD-National District), president of the Chamber of Deputies, told Diario Libre that no one can rule out President Leonel Fernandez running for President for the PLD in the 2012 presidential election. "We need to wait a bit more. The Dominican Constitution, as the Russian one, can be modified at any time, with a revision," he said. The ruling PLD party is majority in Congress.
Furthermore, Valentin said that some experts understand Fernandez could run for reelection even without the revision. Giant billboards are going up in Santo Domingo and Santiago subtly promoting President Fernandez as the PLD candidate in the 2012 presidential election.
President Leonel Fernandez pushed forward a new Constitution with major revisions that is effective as of January 2010. In it is Article 124 that prohibits consecutive re-election. The clause eliminated a previous article that impeded Fernandez from running for President in any time in the future.
