The Dario Contreras Hospital, the "Dario" to most people, had eight empty beds in its emergency ward. They were empty for over an hour. According to the chief of traumatology at the hospital, Luis Cabrera Lara, this has not happened in a long, long time. The situation at 1:05pm was said to have broken a record, according to the doctor. The emergency ward at the Dario treats as many as 175 seriously injured people each day, and sometimes patients have to be placed on the floor due to lack of space. Most patients are gunshot victims or accident victims, and Cabrera Lara says that the recent activity of police patrols has apparently been very effective in reducing his patient load. The emergency specialist couldn't believe his eyes. In fact, he was afraid that the night shift would see the usual 200 patients. The hospital director, Hector Quezada, told Hoy reporters that his office was preparing the monthly reports in order to compare the July statistics with those of previous months. At the hospital, one that sees most of the seriously injured from all over the country, the 15th, 25th and 30th of the month are the days of the greatest activity since these are the normal paydays for employees. On holiday weekends that coincide with these dates, the hospital sometimes sees as many as 400 or 500 cases in the emergency wards.
