President Leonel Fernandez left today at 10:30am on board a private plane to Cuba to meet with his colleague Raul Castro to discuss "issues on the bilateral and regional agenda," the Presidency reported.
Diario Libre reports that President Fernandez would serve as a mediator in a regional international conflict. The trip had not been planned. Diario Libre says that for President Fernandez to travel to Cuba, Vice President Rafael Alburquerque, who was in San Salvador participating in the Extraordinary Meeting of Heads of State and Government of the Central American Integration System (SICA) had to prematurely return to the country.
A trusted source had also told Listin Diario that Fernandez would mediate in Cuba on matters of interest to the United States. On 12 July, Fernandez met with President Barack Obama at the Oval Office.
The Presidency said that on his schedule is a meeting with Cuban professors, a talk at the University of Havana on "The Global Financial Crisis." He will be received with honors of a visiting statesman at the Cuban government headquarters and is scheduled to meet with Fidel Castro. In the evening, Fernandez will attend a special dinner in his honor.
Fernandez is scheduled to return on Friday, 23 July. Traveling with him are Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, Secretary Miguel Mejia and Press Secretary Rafael Nunez.
