If more power generation capacity is not added, the country is going to have a serious power deficit as of 2014, Celso Marranzini, executive vice president of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) told Hoy. Marranzini said that the latest generators installed date back to 2001 (319 MW by AES), 2003 (100 MW by Monte Rio) and 2009 (50 MW Laesa). Laesa is adding 60 MW to the system this year.
He said 64 MW from wind energy will be ready by 2011. In addition, the former Cogentrix power plant of 300 MW is being converted to natural gas.
The CDEEE is also contracting 150 MW in container power generation systems based on natural gas. He said there are talks regarding contracting 800 MW in coal-fired plants and another 600 MW in natural gas plants. These plants would enter into operation in 2014 if started this year.
In his update on the advances into his administration of the CDEEE that began in August 2009, Marranzini said collections of the power distribution companies are up RD$102 million this year compared to the same first five months of the year in 2009.
He advanced the CDEEE is working on a program to install pre-paid meters in low income areas where previously fixed rates had been charged.
He also said that the CDEEE cut its general and administrative costs RD$741.3 million from January to May of this year.
He recommended that consumers take their complaints to the new ICODEN division, Tel 809 508-9111.
