President Leonel Fernandez returned at noon on Friday, after a two-day official visit to Cuba. On Thursday, he met his Cuban colleague Raul Castro in La Havana. He congratulated him on the release of 52 political prisoners from Cuba during their closed-door meeting. He also spoke at the University of Havana and proposed new economics.
He mentioned that the current financial crisis demonstrates the economic model of capitalism is on the way to extinction. He said the next revolution needs to be one capable of producing a model based on sustainable development and a knowledged-based society. He says the advances in renewable energy are incubating the coming revolution.
According to Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, the release of the prisoners " was a move that was applauded by everyone." He added that the Dominican Republic is ready to "collaborate and assist" on the issue.
In Havana, Morales Troncoso said that the DR favors the lifting of the US economic blockade against Cuba and expressed the DR's support to Cuba becoming a member of the Cotonou Agreement, signed by African, Pacific and Caribbean countries. Morales' statements come less than two weeks after President Fernandez and himself met with President Barack Obama at the White House.
The Dominican and Cuban governments signed several agreements to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.
