A Dominican factory wants to raise the bar and be good news for the community. The New York Times tells the story of Knights Apparel operating in Villa Altagracia, where employees are paid many times the average wage. The fair apparel scheme is bringing prosperity to the community but there is doubt whether the market will be willing to pay the difference in price.
Industry experts say it is a pioneer in the developing world because it pays a "living wage" - in this case, three times the average pay of the country's apparel workers - and allows workers to join a union without a fight.
The company has 120 employees in Villa Altagracia that make college-logo apparel sold at US universities.
