Hoy editorial on Sunday reported that the country appears to have become accustomed to the strong words of Peravia senator Wilton Guerrero and his statements that drug trafficking has infiltrated the very machinery that is called upon to fight it.
The editorialist writes that Guerrero's serious comments are met with but silence from the authorities, despite the regular disclosing of cases of officers in common cause with organized crime.
The legislator has said this is a lost cause because the big fish in drug trafficking have been excluded from the cases of Paya, Quirino and those against Jose David Figueroa Agosto.
"In a country where the highest authorities talk up their intention of not allowing the sacred cows to roam, Guerrero is a brave and coherent critic. He insists on the systematic impunity that seems to match the gravity that the public opinion sees in this evil," writes the newspaper.
