The president of the National Council of Business, Lisandro Macarulla expressed his concern for the prevalence given to politics in the DR in an interview on Uno+Uno on TeleAntillas. The presidential election is slated for 2012, but already Santo Domingo and Santiago are being dotted with billboards promoting the candidacy of President Leonel Fernandez. Contradictorily, the 2010 Constitution impedes President Fernandez from running for President.
Macarrulla said that the country needs time to focus instead on the most pressing national problems. As reported in Hoy, he complained about the importance the government attributes to politics instead of focusing on the real problems.
Macarrulla also expressed concern about a bill that would increase fuel taxes, in addition to the announced indexing of fuel prices. He said that in the package of laws Congress needs to pass to comply with the 2010 Constitution there are many that will affect the productive sector, including manufacturing, tourism and construction sectors.
At a meeting yesterday, the National Council of Business concluded that measures proposed by Hacienda Minister Vicente Bengoa would increase the trade deficit and result in less jobs. He said the measures run against the productive sectors. He alerted the measures could have a boomerang effect for the government because they are stimulating informal businesses that do not pay taxes.
