The government is intent on advancing on the construction of the second line of the Metro. But Hoy newspaper makes the point that contradictorily it has not started the complementary works that are necessary for the successful operation of the first north-south line, such as the feeder bus routes, the parking and the paving of streets in the Santo Domingo Norte municipality.
The metro authorities had said that in December, the first 100 buses that would feed passengers into the Santo Domingo metro first line would be operating.
Reportedly, the InterAmerican Development Bank donated US$1 million for the implementation of the feeder program in October 2009. But Hoy says there are no signs of any advances in this project.
The first line of the Metro began operations on 30 January with 14.5 kms and 16 stations. Reports are that an estimated mere 25,000 passengers use the line on a daily basis. The feeder routes would significantly increase usage of the metro.
