Generally avoid traveller's cheques and bring cash.

Alternatively you can often get the best exchange rate withdrawing from an ATM. Make sure you have more than 1 bankcard. One way to do this is to have 2 separate accounts that you can access on the Internet so you have more than 1 bank card. Transfer from 1 account to the other online as or if required.

And only use the ATM outside a bank during business hours. The ATMs have a habit of eating your card. During business hours you can go into the bank and get your card back. I also have two cards and one of them NEVER leaves my safe unless emergency. The other account only has cash I want to withdraw in it.

I would not bring traveler checks. I'm not sure who would take them. A bank might cash them but I don't think any bar or restaurant would want them.

I always bring AMEX TC's. Banks Popular or your bank in DR accept them with a passport at higher exchange rate less commission which ends the same rate.

If ATMs or CC's don't work by whatever reason, then CC's are means of payment and are replacable (cash is not and CC's are not unless you back home)

Also TC's are traceable and I used them several times in shops and travel agencies when I did business with them first time and/or was not sure if I receive the service or ordered product and was reluctant to imprint my CC.

ASK yourself a simple question, what would you do if you loose your wallet immediately after landing and do not have an account in DR?

I would have to agree with the others on this one and I travel more times per year than most people.

1. If you get trav. ch.s free then bring a few if it makes you happy I have hid a few hundred of them in the lining of something just in case and after a few trips redeposited them in my bank since they are a pain in the ass to cash.
2. Credit card conversion fees are relatively low so if they take a CC fine pay by card but there may be a transaction fee plus percentage so only do it for the car and perhaps hotel or large things like dinner for a group.
3. ATM's are the best way to get extra cash and bring 2 cards one in your front pocket by your dick that you should know if someone trys to get it and one hid in luggage. Use these when and if needed and except the fee of 1-3%.
4. Cheapest way stay in place with real safe not joke box and bring a $1000 cash or whatever you figure for a week and leave car on CC. Then change the cash a couple hundred at a time and you are golden with top rate pesos and no fees.

The only time you should have a large amount of cash with you is when you are traveling from the airport to your hotel.
After you are in your room put it all in the safe and take out only what you are going to spend while you are out of your room.

I am curious about this took. What ATM networks are they on down there. I use a bank and a CU and my CU ATM card does not work on some machines. I just want to make sure I have access to my money because I don't plan on brining down a large sum of cash.

There is reliable ATM next to Super Super Liquors in Sosua. I have not had any problems with it. During Business hours there is a guard outside of it. It has all of the banking network symbols. I bring cash lock it in the safe and if I need extra that is the ATM I trust.

Banco Popluar is on different network but the other banks seem to be connected to the US banking type system i.e. visa, mastercard, cirrus.

Banco Progresso...my fav. bank machine in Sosua and it also has the highest limit at 30,000 pesos, over $800 USD, per withdrawal.

Not at all.

Just have to take precautions.

Go in the day, bring a friend or 2. Go straight back to your SAFE and secure it. Then go have fun.
Damn that's dangerous.
I always offer to go with my buddies as well. 3 guys, in the day, in down town Sosua...you're not going to get rolled.

Oh I meant its dangerous for my pockets that I can take out that much a day. 500 is usually the limit.

jejejeje, Gotcha!

If your limit at your home back is smaller then it's whichever is less...as for your "personal/sensible" limit, that's another story altogether! :D
