Education Minister Melanio Paredes has announced that the 2010-2011 school year starts on Tuesday, 17 August. He encouraged parents with children in public schools to ensure the fulfillment of the school calendar so that the 1000 x 1000 Program is truly effective. He called on parents to send their children to public and private schools from day one so that the children can make the most of the school year. He also reminded them that education is a joint effort between parents, teachers and school officials. Paredes acknowledged that the system often scores poorly, and he said that the best way to improve was to get families to participate. The minister made these announcements during a visit to two of the larger public schools in Santo Domingo, the Pilar Constanzo Polytechnic School in Villa Duarte and the Union Pan-Americana High School in central Santo Domingo.
